The Foundation Engine developed by Crystal Dynamics brings the world alive around Lara Croft in Rise of the Tomb Raider – it features advanced rendering techniques for skin and clothing, utilizes spline-based hair rendering and physics, and uses volumetric lighting and advanced motion blur effects, just to name a few. How well does a budget rig handle all these cutting-edge technologies?

RotTR was released as a timed exclusive for Xbox platforms, but clearly, the developers made a remarkable PC version with both DX11 and DX12 APIs – in all our benchmarks with the game the frame times are phenomenal. Overall, there’s not much between the two rendering APIs, the game performs better with the RX 550, it edges out the GT 1030 by a margin of 17%. Thanks to the fact that Rise of the Tomb Raider targeted 30 FPS on game consoles, the game feels quite smooth with an entry-level system.
