When Crytek released Crysis back in 2007 the game was so demanding even on high-end systems that it quickly became the de facto bencmark for PC gamers. With Crysis 3 the developers raised the bar even higher. The game features advanced graphical effects like volumetric fog shadows, dynamic vegetation, area lighting. But Crysis 3 is also heavy on the CPU as well, it is one of the first games that utilizes multi-core processors. We investigate the performance of AMD's Ryzen 3 1200 and Intel's i3 7100 in the "Welcome to the Jungle" mission, rendering tasks are handled by the MSI GTX 980 GAMING 4G.
It's clear that these CPUs lack the horse-power required to run Crysis 3 in high / very high settings, both processors have a hard time maintaining smooth frame times. In The Witcher 3 the i3 was considerably smoother in more demanding areas of the game, Crysis 3 performs noticeably better with the Ryzen 3 1200.
